MY SERVICE
My service is geared to be flexible and to suit the individual’s needs.
ANTENATAL:
I can provide Parent Education classes in my home or 'one to one' in your home to help you and your partner prepare for labour and birth and to feed and care for your new baby. I am available for telephone advice.
BIRTH SUPPORT:
I will make myself available for the start of labour giving advice on the phone and coming to your home or meeting you in Hospital when needed.
I will then support you and your partner throughout your labour, by encouraging you to breathe, relax and adopt different positions to help your labour to progress.
I will attend to your physical and emotional needs, relieve your partner for breaks, act as your advocate, discussing your care and explaining events as necessary.
I will encourage you throughout the last stage of labour and the birth of your baby and stay to help you with the first feed (if required) and make sure you are comfortable and ready to move to the post-natal ward.
The Midwives are quite used to my presence now and realise I am there to help you and them.
I have offered support and encouragement to mothers to be and their partners throughout labour, both for first labours and subsequent ones following difficult or traumatic birth experiences.
It has been very rewarding for me to see a positive outcome and in many cases a vaginal birth after a caesarian (VBAC).
"Research has shown that having continuous support from a woman throughout labour can reduce the need for pain relief, operative deliveries including caesarians, dissatifacion with the birth experience and a more positive overall experience." (MIDIRS - Support in labour for informed choice - Professionals).
POST-NATAL SUPPORT:
I strongly believe that continuity of advice and support to breastfeed your baby are of paramount importance hence my aim is to help you with both the first feed and subsequent feeds. However, I am more than happy to provide an 'ad hoc' trouble-shooting service as and when necessary in hospital or at home.
I will make myself available 24 hours/day to come and help you to breastfeed your baby within two hours of birth. I will then come into Hospital for subsequent feeds, according to your needs.
If required I can also come to your home to help you to care for and feed your new baby.
The time I have spent with new mothers and their families has varied from an individual visit to help a mother with breastfeeding concerns, to spending a few weeks night and day intermittently with one mother as a Maternity nurse.
I do however work alone at present and therefore am unable to be exclusively available, especially at short notice, or if I have pre-booked clients who deliver close together. So far I haven’t experienced a serious clash that has caused me to be unavailable and have managed to look after several clients at a time.
